Johnson's Shut-ins
The following information was written pre-Taum Sauk Electric Dam loosing all its water over the Johnson' Shut-in area. Check website below for visiting information.
An hour's drive from east Eminence is Johnson's Shut-ins State Park, one of the crown jewels of the Missouri State Park System. This area has two shut-in areas with Bluff all around. The Shut-ins has some of the best swimming holes in the state and very nice camping and picnicing facilities.
Climbing is allowed WITH PERMIT AND HELMET after Labor day and before Memorial Day. Contact the park office about how to get a permit (it's easy) and other regulations climbers must follow.
Johnson's Shut-Ins is located in the Southeast Region of Missouri off of Highway 21 on N highway. It is also near another Top 10 Attraction, Elephant Rock State Park. While you are in the area, don't neglect to visit Taum Sauk Mountain State Park containing the highest point in Missouri.

Also near these sites is the Taum Sauk Electric Dam. This dam was created by taking the top off a mountain and hollowing it out like a bowl. A small interprative demonstration is position on the wall of the main office at the foot of the hill. After a drive to the parking lot at the top of the mountain, a ramp and stairs lead to the edge of the man made lake. Truly an amazing spot when empty. The bulldozers and trucks in the bottom look like toys.
